The best well known ancient font is the Egyptian ‘Hieroglyphic’, made up of over 6000 characters. Characters can be signs or images, the sound of which would make up a specific word. The medium to print on was the well known papyrus. But there have been other colorful fonts in other civilizations, for example among the Mayas in Central America. Rather than paper obtained from the papyrus plant (that where the word ‘paper’ comes from), the Mayans used a similar medium obtained from the ficus tree. As we all know, the Mayan civilization disappeared and very few Mayan writings (or codices) remain. The codes have never been satisfactorily deciphered but the writings are as beautiful in their own way as the Egyptian hieroglyphics. In their style of writing, scribes divided space into rectangles of red lines. The text was compiled in a most curious way. You would read one line from left to right and the next line from right to left. In the technical lingo of printing this style is called ‘boustrophedon’.
