| The Koran, as we well know, is the Bible of Islam, but in a sense, is more central to the Muslim religion than the Bible is to the Christians. Why? Because Islam has no priestly class, therefore it is the duty of every Muslim to instruct himself by reading the Koran. In fact, the first word of the Koran is a word and an injunction, common to all school-teachers worldwide, namely ‘Read!..in the name of the Lord’ etc.
Being the representation of the word of God, the font used to write it had to be worthy of the message it conveyed. This is why calligraphy, born in principle with the Egyptian hieroglyphs, became so important with Islamic writing and why Islamic printing has a powerful eye appeal even to those who do not know how to read it or what it means. We owe to Islam the preservation of the Greek literature and general classic tradition. And we owe it because of Islam’s inherent reverence for books. Without Islam there would not have been a Renaissance. Caliph Al Ma’mun brought from Byzantium to Baghdad some of the original editions of the Greek philosophers and had them copied in Baghdad and kept in what was called ‘The House of Wisdom’, a library as well as a university. |
