| Writing (and therefore thousands of years later printing with your jet ink printing machine, our inkjet printer cartridges and our inks) evolved gradually from an accurate pictorial representation of reality towards abstractions (in the form of letters). For example, the letter 'A' developed originally from the pictograph (i.e. pictorial representation) of a bull. That is, a bull flipped over and with eyes removed from the representation. 'Alpha', which is the Greek sound rendition of the letter 'A' means 'bull' or 'ox' in several of the old Semitic languages from which Greek evolved. Another example, letter 'N' evolved from the wiggly line that in pictographic representations referred to a snake. The Semitic word for 'snake' is 'nahas' - where the 'snakishness' of the written word is carried by that very letter 'N' that eventually found its way in late alphabets (and fonts). |
